Broadcast Church Livestream System

Last updated

Quick answer

A broadcast-grade church livestream system costs about $16,513. It runs eight inputs with isolated recording, three 4K NDI cameras and a cinema camera, with an eighteen channel multitrack audio path so the broadcast mix is built rather than borrowed.

This build is for a church with a dedicated media team, a multi-campus delivery requirement or genuine broadcast ambitions. It is not a natural next step from a three camera system, and saying so is more useful than selling it: the gap is a paid or near-professional operator and a weekly time commitment most volunteer teams cannot sustain.

What the money actually buys is not resolution. It is redundancy, recoverability and an audio path that is mixed for headphones rather than borrowed from a room.

NDI carries video, control and power planning over the existing network, which is what makes four or more camera positions practical without four SDI pulls.

Rack, power and redundancy

Power sequencing and filtered supply at every position. A broadcast system that thumps or loses power mid-service is worse than a simpler one that does not.

Equipment only, and at this level the equipment is the smaller half of the problem. A managed network with a separate VLAN for NDI traffic, a redundant internet path, lighting designed for camera rather than for reading, and a team with at least one experienced operator are all prerequisites rather than upgrades. Do not buy this list before those exist.

Prices were accurate when this list was compiled and change often, so confirm each one before the committee votes. Quantities are multiplied into the total. This total covers equipment only: it does not include installation labor, rigging, conduit, electrical work or permits, which on an installed system commonly add 30 to 60 percent.

What actually separates broadcast from good

Not resolution, and not camera count. Three things, in this order.

Lighting. A camera sees far less dynamic range than an eye. A face lit only by diffuse overhead light has shadows in the eye sockets and under the chin, and no camera fixes that. Broadcast-looking church video is almost always lit video.

Audio mixed for headphones. Covered on the multi-camera build and it matters more here: the room supplies drums and acoustic instruments for free and headphones do not, so a borrowed house mix arrives thin and vocal-heavy no matter what it cost to capture.

Recoverability. Isolated recording of every input means a mistake is not permanent. That single capability is what lets a team improve, because it removes the fear that makes operators cut conservatively and produce a dull stream.

A church that fixes those three with three cameras will out-produce a church that buys this list and fixes none of them.

Is this the right project for your church?

A broadcast system needs a managed network, camera-specific lighting, redundant internet and at least one experienced operator. Missing any of the four means the money is better spent elsewhere.

Honest readiness test for a broadcast livestream system
PrerequisiteIf you have itIf you do not
At least one experienced operatorThis system rewards themBuy the three camera system instead
Lighting designed for cameraThe pictures will look broadcastSpend here first, it costs less
Managed network with a VLAN for NDINDI is reliable and simpleUse SDI, or fix the network first
Redundant internetThe stream survives an outageOne outage takes the whole service off air
Multitrack audio capabilityThe mix can be built properlyThe stream will sound thin regardless
A weekly team of three or fourSustainableIt will be abandoned inside a year

This table exists because the most expensive mistake in church video is buying broadcast equipment for a volunteer-only team. There is no shame in the simpler system; it produces a better stream in that situation.

What you can skip

Skip this entire build if your team is volunteers only. That is the honest recommendation. A three camera hardware-switched system runs itself; this one does not, and an under-operated broadcast system produces a worse stream than a well-operated simple one.

Skip 4K delivery. Shoot 4K so you can crop, deliver 1080p. Delivering 4K triples your bitrate for a resolution almost no viewer of a church service is using.

Skip the second cinema camera. One hero shot is a feature. Two is a colour-matching problem every single week.

What to upgrade first

Lighting designed for camera, before any of this. At this level lighting is the difference between broadcast and merely expensive. A sanctuary lit for a congregation to read by will make five excellent cameras produce five mediocre pictures.

Then a redundant internet path. At this investment a single connection is the weakest link in the chain. A second connection on a different carrier, with automatic failover, is cheaper than any camera here and protects everything else.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a broadcast church livestream system cost?

About $16,513 for the equipment on this list. The prerequisites are frequently larger: a managed network, camera-appropriate lighting, a redundant internet path and cable infrastructure to five camera positions can together exceed the equipment cost in an existing building.

Is NDI or SDI better for a church?

NDI carries video over the network you already have, which makes additional camera positions a patch cable rather than a cable pull, and that is a genuine advantage in an occupied building. It needs a managed switch and ideally its own VLAN, because NDI traffic is substantial. SDI is a dedicated cable per camera and is completely immune to a network problem. If your network is unmanaged, choose SDI.

Do we need a cinema camera in the mix?

Only for one shot. A Super 35 sensor with a fast lens gives a shallow depth of field that pan tilt zoom cameras cannot produce, which is what makes a close shot of the speaker look like film rather than like security footage. One is a feature. Two becomes a colour matching exercise every week, which is why this build has one.

Should we deliver the stream in 4K?

No. Shoot in 4K and deliver 1080p. Shooting 4K lets you crop into a wide shot without losing resolution, which effectively gives a second angle from one camera. Delivering 4K triples the bitrate requirement for a resolution almost nobody watching a church service is actually using.

Can volunteers run a system like this?

Some can, with at least one experienced person leading and a stable weekly team of three or four. But the honest answer is that a purely volunteer team is usually better served by the three camera hardware-switched system, which runs itself. An under-operated broadcast system produces a worse stream than a well-operated simple one, and it costs several times more.
