Projection Screen Size Calculator

Last updated

Quick answer

Screen size is set by the furthest seat, not the wall. For lyrics and sermon points the six times rule applies, so a back row 50 feet from the screen needs an image at least 8.3 feet high, which is about a 180 inch diagonal in 16 by 9.

Almost every church buys a screen to fit the wall and then wonders why the back rows cannot read it. The correct input is the distance to the furthest seat, and the standard is the four, six and eight times rule: the furthest viewer sits no more than that many screen heights back, depending on what you put on screen.

Enter your room below. The result also shows the projector brightness that screen size will require, because a screen that is big enough and a projector that is bright enough are two separate problems and churches routinely solve only one.

What is the four, six and eight times rule?

It expresses the maximum viewing distance as a multiple of screen height. Divide your furthest seat distance by the multiple to get the minimum screen height. A church projecting song lyrics and scripture sits squarely in the six times row.

For a back row 46 feet from the screen, lyrics and sermon points need an image at least 7.7 feet high, which is about a 167 inch 16 by 9 diagonal.

Fine detail and small text4x screen height11.5 ft281 in
Lyrics, sermon points, scripture6x screen height7.7 ft188 in
Video and images only8x screen height5.8 ft141 in

Move up to the four times row if you also project small text such as announcements, giving details or scripture in a small typeface, because that is analytical viewing rather than basic.

Screen size by sanctuary depth

Allowing for the platform, the furthest seat sits at roughly 92 percent of the room depth. Find your room and read across.

A 60 foot deep sanctuary needs a screen at least 9.2 feet high, about a 200 inch diagonal, for lyrics to be readable from the back row.

Minimum screen size by sanctuary depth, six times rule

25 ft deep23 ft3.8 ft6.8 ft94 in
35 ft deep32 ft5.4 ft9.5 ft131 in

80 ft deep74 ft12.3 ft21.8 ft300 in
100 ft deep92 ft15.3 ft27.3 ft375 in

Two screens flanking the platform do not change this arithmetic. Each screen must be big enough on its own for the people actually watching it, so two small screens do not add up to one big one.

Which standard screen sizes work, and what they need from a projector

Screens are sold in standard diagonals, so the practical question is which stock size clears the requirement and what it then costs in projector brightness.

A 150 inch screen is 6.1 feet high and serves a back row about 37 feet away, and it needs roughly 3,500 ANSI lumens under normal service lighting.

100 in7.3 ft4.1 ft25 ft1,000 lm
120 in8.7 ft4.9 ft29 ft1,500 lm

180 in13.1 ft7.4 ft44 ft3,500 lm
200 in14.5 ft8.2 ft49 ft4,000 lm

Lumens assume normal service lighting at 35 foot-lamberts on a 1.1 gain screen. Work your own case through the projector lumens calculator.

One large screen or two smaller ones?

Two screens flanking the platform keep the congregation looking forward and suit a wide, fan-shaped room where a single central screen would be badly off-axis for the outside seats. One central screen is simpler, cheaper and better in a narrow, deep room.

The trap is assuming two screens let each one be smaller. They do not. Every person watching a given screen is subject to the six times rule for that screen, so each one still has to satisfy the requirement independently. Two 120 inch screens in a room that needs 180 inches leaves everybody at the back squinting at two screens instead of one.

Fixed frame screens such as the Elite Screens Sable Frame B2 120" Fixed Frame Projector Screen SB120WH2 and Elite Screens Sable Frame B2 150" Fixed Frame Projector Screen SB150WH2 look crisper than a pull-down because the black velvet border absorbs the overspill at the image edge. A shared room that hosts weddings and concerts usually needs a motorized screen like the Projector Screen Elite Screens Spectrum, 150-INCH Diag 16:9, Motorized Projection Screen Movie Home Theater 4K/8K Ultra HD Ready, Black Case, ELECTRIC150H2 instead, because a 150 inch manual pull-down is a two-person job before every service. Where the room has real windows, an ambient light rejecting surface such as the Elite Screens 150-Inch ALR Projector Screen 16:9 – Ceiling & Ambient Light Rejecting, Fixed Frame Wall Mounted, ISF-Certified CineGrey 3D for Home Theater, Standard Throw Projectors, ER150DHD3 does more for contrast than another few thousand lumens.

Frequently asked questions

What size projection screen does a church need?

Divide the distance to the furthest seat by six to get the minimum image height for lyrics and sermon points. A back row 50 feet away needs an image at least 8.3 feet high, which is about a 180 inch 16 by 9 diagonal. Use four instead of six if you also project small text such as announcements or giving information.

What is the six times rule for screen size?

It is the AV industry guideline that the furthest viewer should sit no more than six screen heights from the screen for basic decision making, which covers song lyrics, scripture and sermon points. Four heights applies to fine detail and small text, and eight heights to passive viewing of video and images only.

How high should a church projection screen be mounted?

The bottom of the image should sit at least 4 feet above the floor so heads in the rows in front do not block it, and higher on a flat floor where sightlines are worse. Balance that against neck strain at the front: the top of the image should not force the nearest seats to look up more than about 35 degrees.

Is one big screen better than two smaller screens?

It depends on the room shape. Two screens flanking the platform work well in a wide fan-shaped sanctuary and keep people looking forward. One central screen is simpler and better in a narrow deep room. What does not work is using two screens as an excuse to buy smaller ones, because each screen must independently satisfy the six times rule for the people watching it.

Should a church still use a 4:3 screen?

Rarely now. Almost all presentation software, video and camera output is 16 by 9, so projecting it on a 4:3 screen wastes the screen you paid for. The only real exception is a church with a large library of older 4:3 material it genuinely still uses every week, and even then a 16 by 9 screen with pillarboxing is usually the better compromise.

Does a bigger screen need a brighter projector?

Yes, and proportionally to area rather than to diagonal. Brightness at the screen is lumens divided by area, so doubling the screen width quadruples the area and quarters the perceived brightness. A 200 inch screen needs roughly four times the lumens of a 100 inch one for the same image. Check the requirement with the projector lumens calculator before committing to a size.
