Console size is the decision churches regret fastest. A desk bought to exactly fit today’s input list is full on the day it arrives, and the first time a church adds a second campus pastor, a cajon or an ambience pair for the livestream, somebody is unplugging one thing to plug in another during a service.
The rule used throughout this site is deliberately conservative: count the inputs you genuinely use, remember that a stereo source takes two channels, add 25 percent for growth, then round up to a channel count that is actually sold. Console sizes here are the counts consoles are genuinely sold in: 8, 12, 16, 18, 24, 32, 40 and 48. The 25 percent growth allowance is not padding, it is the observed rate at which church input lists expand over a console’s service life. Past 48 channels the answer is a different class of console rather than a bigger number.

Which consoles are sold at each channel count?
Channel count is only half a console specification. The other half is how many of those channels have their own microphone preamp on the box, as opposed to arriving over a digital snake from a stage box. A rack mixer with 16 local inputs and 32 channels of processing is a genuinely different purchase from a desk with 32 preamps on the back.

What actually runs out first, and it is rarely channels
Output buses run out before input channels do. A church counting inputs carefully will still be caught by the mix buses, because every monitor mix, every matrix feed to a cry room or overflow space, every livestream feed and every recording send consumes one. A platform with six monitor mixes, an overflow feed, a stream feed and a lobby feed has used nine buses before the main outputs are considered. Physical faders run out before channels do on a surface console. A 32 channel desk with 16 physical faders means paging between layers, which is a genuine workload difference for a volunteer mixing live. That is the real distinction between a rack mixer controlled from a tablet and a full surface: not what it can process, but how much of it you can reach at once.
Preamps run out before processing does. This is the trap in rack mixers. A desk advertised at 32 channels may have 16 physical microphone inputs, with the rest arriving over a digital snake from a stage box that has to be bought separately. That is often the right architecture, because the preamps sit at the platform where the microphones are, but it is a second purchase and churches are regularly surprised by it.
Volunteers run out before any of it. A 40 channel console in a church with two volunteers who serve monthly is a liability rather than an asset. Where this chart does not apply
It counts inputs, not sources. A stereo keyboard is two channels, a stereo playback device is two, and an ambience pair is two. Churches routinely undercount by listing sources instead, then discover the desk is four channels short on the first Sunday.
It says nothing about preamp quality. Two consoles at the same channel count can differ substantially in how much clean gain they deliver, which matters enormously for distant choir microphones and low output dynamics. A church miking a choir from a high ceiling should weigh gain and noise performance above channel count.
Analogue and digital are not comparable at the same number. A 16 channel analogue desk gives you 16 channels and whatever outboard you own. A 16 channel digital desk gives you 16 channels each with a gate, compressor and equaliser, plus effects, plus scene recall. Growth is not always 25 percent. A church plant meeting in a school may double its input list in two years, and a settled traditional congregation may not change it in ten. Adjust the allowance to your own trajectory rather than treating the figure as a law.
Multi-campus and broadcast change the model entirely. Once a church is producing a separate broadcast mix, the honest answer is usually a second console or a dedicated broadcast desk rather than more channels on one, because a single operator cannot serve a room and a stream well at the same time.
