How to Choose a Church Mixing Console

Count every input, add about 25 percent for growth, then round up to a size that is actually sold. A church with 16 inputs needs a 24 channel console, not a 16 channel one, because a desk with no spare channels gets replaced within about two years.

Console selection is the decision churches enjoy most and get wrong most often, because it is the visible purchase and because the specification that matters is boring. The right console is decided by an input list and by who operates it, not by channel count bragging rights or brand loyalty. A 32 channel desk in a church with 12 inputs is money that should have gone into loudspeakers.

There are really only three questions. How many inputs do you have and will have. Do your operators change from week to week. And does the room need mixes for monitors, a livestream and an overflow space, or just a house mix. Build the input list first

An input list is every source that needs a channel, written down. For a typical church that means the preaching microphone, a lectern or pulpit microphone, two to four worship vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, choir microphones, playback from a computer, and a return from the livestream system if there is one.

Two rules cause almost all under-counting. Stereo sources take two channels, so a stereo keyboard is two inputs and playback from a laptop is two more. And a drum kit is not one input: a five piece kit with overheads is seven. A church that writes "drums, 1" on its list will be short six channels on the first Sunday the full band plays.

Then add growth. A 25 percent margin is the working convention and it is not generosity, it is realism about how churches change: a new instrument, a second campus feed, a hearing assistance send, an extra vocal. Input counts assume a typical blended or contemporary service with a band, choir microphones and a livestream feed. A church with an orchestra, a large choir or multiple campuses will exceed these and should build its own list rather than use the table.

Digital or analog, and why recall usually settles it

The honest technical answer is that a good analog console and a good digital console both sound fine, and the choice is about workflow. The decisive feature for most churches is scene recall. A digital console stores every setting as a named scene, so the volunteer arriving on a rotating rota starts from the settings that worked last week rather than from whatever the last person left behind. In a church staffed by volunteers, that is worth more than any specification on the audio path.

Digital also brings processing that would cost thousands separately: a gate, a compressor and a parametric equaliser on every channel, plus effects and a system processor. Analog still wins in two situations. A very small church with six inputs and one operator who understands the desk does not need recall, and the Yamaha MG12XU at $425.00 is a perfectly good answer. And a church whose volunteers are genuinely intimidated by menus may get more consistent results from knobs they can see. Be honest about which of those describes your team.

Surface, rack or tablet

A third decision that churches meet late. A traditional surface console has physical faders and lives at a mix position in the room, which is where mixing should happen because that is where the congregation sits. The tablet approach is genuinely liberating and has two costs worth stating. How to choose a console in seven steps

  1. Write the input list for the largest service you run. Not the average Sunday, the Christmas service or the one with the full band and the choir. Count stereo sources twice and count every drum microphone separately. This is the number the whole decision rests on, and under-counting here is the most common console buying mistake.
  2. Add 25 percent and round up to a size that is sold. Consoles come in 8, 12, 16, 18, 24, 32, 40 and 48 channel sizes. Rounding up to the next real size costs far less at purchase than replacing a desk that ran out of channels. A 16 input church buys 24 channels.
  3. Count the output mixes you need, not just the inputs. House mix, monitor mixes for the platform, a livestream feed that needs its own balance, an overflow room, a hearing assistance send and a recording feed are all separate buses.   4. Decide whether you need scene recall. If the person mixing changes from week to week, the answer is yes and that points at digital. If one trained operator mixes every service, recall matters much less. Be realistic about your rota rather than aspirational about your volunteers.
  5. Choose the control surface format. A surface at a mix position, a rack unit driven by a tablet, or a compact desk with both. Consider where the operator physically needs to be, what floor space you can give up, and how reliable the building Wi-Fi is if a tablet is in the signal path.
  6. Check the stage box and cabling implications. A digital console with a stage box such as the S16 replaces a heavy copper snake with one network cable, which changes the installation cost considerably. Confirm the console and stage box speak the same protocol and that the cable run is shielded Cat6 rather than whatever is in the cupboard.
  7. Budget training time alongside the purchase. A digital console delivers its benefit only if the team can drive it. Plan at least one training session and one full rehearsal before the first service, and build a locked default scene that a volunteer can always return to when something has been changed and nobody knows what.

What not to spend money on

Channel count you will never use. A 32 channel desk in a 12 input church is roughly the price of a serious loudspeaker upgrade, and the loudspeakers are what the congregation hears. Buy the size the list calls for with growth, and put the difference where it changes the sound.

Onboard effects you will not use either. Reverb and delay on a worship vocal are useful; the other forty presets are not a reason to choose a console. And outboard processing that duplicates what a digital console already does: a church buying a digital desk does not also need an outboard gate and compressor, because it has one on every channel already.
