How many roaming channels does a church need?

One, plus a spare, covers most churches. The spare is not a luxury: this is the channel most likely to fail in front of everyone, because it is handled by people who do not know where the mute switch is and it runs on batteries somebody else was supposed to change. A dual receiver gives you two channels in one rack space and one power outlet, which is usually the right purchase over a second standalone system.

The gain before feedback problem specific to this position

Every other microphone in the building is behind the loudspeakers. This one walks in front of them, which inverts the usual relationship: as the microphone moves toward the seats, the loudspeaker level at the capsule rises while the voice level stays the same. The margin you set on the platform is gone by the third row.

Three things help and they compound. A supercardioid capsule rejects more of what is in front of it from off axis angles, which is exactly the geometry here. Loudspeakers aimed so their coverage starts at the first row rather than spilling onto the platform edge keep the front rows quieter than they would otherwise be. And teaching the technique takes thirty seconds: hold the capsule close to the mouth, not down at chest height, because a microphone held low is far from the voice and close to the speakers, which is the worst combination available. That one instruction is worth more than any processing.

What usually goes wrong

The transmitter switch, first and always. Somebody finds it, mutes the microphone and hands it to the next person, and thirty seconds of confusion follow. Mute at the console, tape over the switch if the transmitter allows, and make sure the operator knows which fader it is without looking. Second, dead batteries, because this channel is used intermittently and nobody notices it has been on since the rehearsal.

Third, handing the microphone to a person and letting them hold it at chest height, which is a technique problem with a thirty second fix. Fourth, range: the balcony and the foyer are usually outside what the receiver can manage, and the answer is antenna placement rather than a bigger transmitter, since operating power is capped by the FCC rules set out in the legal band list. Get the antennas out of the closed rack and give them line of sight down the room.
