What each extra open microphone costs you
Doubling the number of open microphones roughly doubles the loop gain of the system, which is about 3 dB of gain before feedback given away. It also doubles the amount of room, wedge and drum kit arriving in the vocal mix, which is the audible problem long before feedback becomes the audible problem.

The penalty is a property of the number of open channels, not of the microphones. Buying better capsules improves rejection per channel but does not change this arithmetic.
The 3 to 1 rule, and why spacing matters more than capsule
When two microphones pick up the same voice at different distances, the delayed copy combines with the direct sound and cancels parts of the spectrum, which is heard as a thin, phasey, hollow vocal. The rule that avoids it is simple: the distance between two microphones should be at least three times the distance from each microphone to its own source. A singer six inches from their microphone needs at least eighteen inches to the next microphone.
In practice that means singers stand further apart than they want to, and the fix when they will not is to move the microphones rather than the people: angle each capsule away from the neighbouring singer so the rejection null points at them. A supercardioid or hypercardioid pattern makes this far more effective, which is the real reason those patterns suit backing vocals better than a cardioid does. The single highest value habit for backing vocals is muting. A channel that is not being sung into is contributing bleed and loop gain for no benefit, and on a digital console a mute group makes this one button rather than six.

The gain before feedback problem specific to this position
Backing vocalists stand in a line, usually close together because the platform is narrow, often with a wedge in front of each of them. That is the worst geometry available: several open microphones, close together, each pointed at a loudspeaker. Backing vocals work as a blend, and the mix sounds better when they sit behind the lead with less presence and less individual character.
