Nameplate ratings on amplifiers describe the maximum draw, not the typical one, so a rack of equipment rarely draws its nameplate total. That is not a reason to plan past the 80 percent figure. What a power conditioner does and does not do
It distributes power, which is the main job. Nine or eight switched outlets in one rack unit means one cable to the wall rather than a daisy chain of power strips, and it means one switch at the end of a service rather than eight. It occupies the top unit of the equipment rack, above the heat rising off the amplifiers.
It protects against surges. Series mode protection, which the better units use, absorbs energy rather than diverting it to ground, and unlike a basic surge strip it does not wear out after absorbing a single large event. That matters in a building that takes a lightning hit once a decade.
It filters noise, and this is where expectations need managing. Filtering removes some high frequency rubbish on the mains, and it does not fix a ground loop, which is the actual cause of nearly every hum a church hears. A ground loop is a wiring topology problem, solved by getting the audio grounds right, never by plugging things into a nicer box, and absolutely never by removing a ground pin.
