Miking it is straightforward once you understand that it is two instruments in one box, a bass note from the port and a slap from the front face, and that you usually have to choose which one to favour. Where to put the cajon microphone

The cajon radiates low frequencies from the rear port and the slap from the front face where the player strikes it. A single microphone has to be placed to balance those, and the position controls that balance far more than EQ does.

A microphone at the rear port, a few inches out, gives the most usable balance of bass and slap for a single channel.

If you use two microphones, check polarity between them before doing anything else. Front and rear capsules on the same instrument are frequently out of phase with each other, which cancels exactly the low end you added the second microphone to capture.

A cajon is a low frequency instrument played with bare hands, so the microphone needs low end extension and enough headroom for a sharp transient. The same microphones that suit a kick drum suit a cajon.

Hand percussion without a channel for every shaker

The instinct when a percussionist arrives with a table of instruments is to give each one a microphone. Resist it. A shaker, a tambourine and a triangle are all quiet, high frequency instruments that a single overhead condenser picks up perfectly well, and each additional open microphone costs gain before feedback across the whole system for a source that occupies a few seconds of the service.

One overhead condenser above the percussion table, high passed at around 300 Hz, covers everything on it. A clip-on condenser is worth adding only for an instrument that is played continuously and needs to be present in the mix, such as congas in a Latin arrangement. For everything else, the overhead is both cheaper and better, because a shaker close miked sounds unnaturally large and a tambourine close miked is painfully bright.

A cajon channel wants roughly what a kick drum channel wants, with rather more attention to the midrange where the slap lives.

Mute the percussion overhead when nothing is being played on the table. It is a condenser pointed at a loud platform and it contributes bleed and loop gain the rest of the time.

What usually goes wrong

A microphone too close to the port, which produces a boomy one note thud with no slap and gets EQ treatment that removes what little definition remained. Two microphones on a cajon with no polarity check, cancelling the low end they were added to capture. A channel for every instrument on the percussion table, adding open microphones for sources that appear briefly. And a cajon mic on a tall boom that the player knocks every time they reach for a shaker.

The other frequent issue is expecting a cajon to replace a drum kit in level as well as in role. It will not: a cajon is a quieter instrument, which is usually the point, and pushing its channel hard enough to match a kit brings the whole platform up with it through the open microphones.
