How to Mic a Drum Kit in Church

Where each microphone goes

The overheads are the pair that make the kit sound like a kit. Position them at equal distance from the centre of the snare, which keeps the snare in the middle of the stereo image, and about 3 to 4 feet above the cymbals. Equal distance matters more than symmetry: use a piece of string from the snare centre to each capsule and match them to within an inch, because a few inches of difference puts the snare off centre and starts comb filtering between the two channels.

How to mic and set up a church drum kit

  1. Tune the drums before you place a microphone. An untuned kit cannot be fixed at the console. A snare with a ringing overtone and a floor tom with a loose head will sound exactly as bad through a 130 dollar microphone as through a 400 dollar one.   2. Place the kick microphone through the port. Two to four inches inside the drum, pointed at the beater spot for a clicky modern sound or angled toward the shell for more body. If the front head has no port, a microphone just outside the front head works but loses attack. Expect a preamp setting of 20 to 30 dB, the lowest on the console.
  3. Place the snare microphone aimed away from the hi-hat. One inch above the rim, one inch in from the edge of the head, angled about 45 degrees at the centre, with the rear of the capsule facing the hi-hat. On a cardioid that puts roughly 20 to 25 dB of rejection on the hi-hat, which turns an unusable channel into a clean one.
  4. Set the overheads at equal distance from the snare. Run a string from the centre of the snare head to each overhead capsule and match the lengths to within an inch. Three to four feet above the cymbals is the usual height. Equal distance keeps the snare centred and prevents comb filtering between the two channels, which is the most common reason a miked kit sounds thin.
  5. Set gain from the loudest hit in the loudest song. Drums have the highest crest factor of anything on the platform: a snare peak sits 15 to 20 dB above the average. Set the preamp so the peak hold lands near -10 dBFS during the biggest chorus, not during a warm up tap, and expect drum channels to need the least gain of anything on the console.
  6. Gate the kick and the toms, never the overheads. A gate on the kick and toms removes the bleed that muddies the low end and tightens the whole kit. A gate on an overhead removes the cymbal decay and sounds obviously wrong. Set the kick gate threshold so a soft hit still opens it, then check it during the quietest song of the set.
  7. High pass everything except the kick. Snare at about 120 Hz, overheads at about 300 Hz, toms at about 80 Hz. The overhead high pass is the one that surprises people: cutting the low end out of the overheads removes the muddy kick bleed and lets the cymbals sit clearly above the mix without raising their level.
  8. Decide about a shield, and be honest about it.
