Buying Used Church Sound Equipment

Used equipment can stretch a church budget a long way, and some categories are genuinely low risk. A passive loudspeaker that works, works. A microphone stand does not degrade. But church AV has one category where a used purchase can be not merely a bad deal but legally unusable, and that category is wireless microphones.

Why so much used wireless is worthless

In the 600 MHz incentive auction, spectrum that wireless microphones had used for decades was sold to mobile carriers. The result is that 617 to 652 MHz and 663 to 698 MHz are now illegal for microphone operation in the United States at any power level. An earlier reallocation did the same to 698 to 806 MHz in 2010. TV channel 37, from 608 to 614 MHz, is reserved for radio astronomy and wireless medical telemetry and has never been legal for microphones.

Wireless systems are built to tune within a fixed hardware frequency range. A receiver built for a band that now sits inside a prohibited range cannot be retuned into legal spectrum, because the radio hardware does not go there. There is no firmware update, no service modification and no workaround. The equipment is scrap for US operation.

This equipment is still sold constantly on secondhand markets, sometimes by churches clearing out cupboards, sometimes by sellers who assume anything that powers on has value. The price will look excellent, because it is. Risk ratings reflect how likely a fault is to be invisible at the point of sale and how expensive it is to put right. Anything with a fan, an amplifier module or a lamp carries hidden wear that a brief demonstration will not reveal.

How to inspect used equipment before buying

  1. Check the wireless frequency range before anything else. Read the printed frequency range on the receiver and the transmitter, not the model number, and compare it with the legal bands. Anything inside 617 to 652, 663 to 698, 698 to 806 or 608 to 614 MHz is illegal to operate and cannot be retuned. Walk away regardless of price.
  2. Power everything on and leave it on. Faults that appear after twenty minutes of warm-up are common in amplifiers and powered loudspeakers and invisible in a two minute demonstration. Ask to leave equipment running while you inspect everything else, and listen for fan noise that changes or a thermal shutdown.
  3. Test every channel, every input and every output. On a console that means every fader, every preamp, every auxiliary send and every output. On a snake it means every conductor with a cable tester. Dead channels and intermittent conductors are the most common used faults and the easiest to miss when you test only channel one.
  4. Listen to every driver in every loudspeaker. Play a full range source at low level and listen for buzz, rattle or a missing high end that indicates a blown compression driver. Check the cabinet for water staining and the drivers for tears at the surround. A blown driver is often economic to replace; a water damaged cabinet is not.
  5. Ask how amplifiers and powered speakers were used. Heat is what ends amplifier life, so a unit racked with ventilation in a church lasts far longer than one in a sealed road case on a touring rig. Ask where it lived, how hard it was driven and whether it has been serviced. The answers are rarely misleading and often revealing.
  6. Check projector lamp hours and light source type. A lamp based projector near the end of its lamp life has a significant cost attached that the price rarely reflects, and brightness will already have declined. Ask for the lamp hours from the menu, and establish whether the light source is a lamp or a laser.
  7. Confirm firmware, software and support are still current. A digital console or a networked device that the manufacturer no longer supports may not run current control software, and a control application that stops working on new tablets effectively ends the useful life of a tablet controlled mixer. Check before buying, not after.
  8. Agree a return arrangement in writing. Even a short return window transforms the risk on a private sale. If the seller will not offer one on equipment they claim is fully working, treat that as information. For a church spending real money, buying from a dealer with a warranty is often worth the premium.

Where used equipment genuinely makes sense

Three cases. A church plant or portable church equipping from nothing, where used passive loudspeakers, stands and cable stretch a small budget enormously and the risk on those categories is low. A church adding capacity to an existing system, where buying a matching used unit keeps everything consistent and spares interchangeable. And infrastructure generally, because racks, stands and cable do not have hidden electronics to fail.

Where it makes least sense is wireless, for the reason above, and anything with a fan or a lamp, where the wear is invisible and the replacement cost is high. If a church has limited money and needs wireless, the honest recommendation is to buy fewer channels new in a legal band rather than more channels used in an uncertain one.
